Harewood House was built in the 1760s for wealthy plantation owner Edwin Lascelles, 1st Baron of Harewood. Its 1,000 acre grounds were designed by “England’s greatest gardener”, Lancelot “Capability” Brown.

Still home to the Lascelles family, Grade 1 listed Harewood House is one of ten foremost historic homes in England. A number of features in its grounds and courtyard have been listed as Grade I, II and II*.

Harewood is also home to an educational bird garden, protecting five exotic species listed as vulnerable or endangered, an adventure playground and historic church with alabaster tombs.

The house was a film location for the 1991 comedy King Ralph, the film version of Downton Abbey and its grounds house the village in ITV’s soap opera Emmerdale. Rock musician Elton John has performed a

concert there. Nearby Harrogate is a spa town tourist destination. Attractions in the ornate town include its Royal Pump Room, Grand Opera House, an area of open parkland in the centre of the town called The Stray and Bettys Tea Rooms, established in 1919.
